Experienced Earthquake in Japan

Author:Frank

We came to Japan on September 1 and have lived in a small city which is about 60 kilometers away from Tokyo. The location is a bit like Yanqing District to Beijing. Soon after arriving Japan, we have already realized there are many differences compared to living in China. Before we came here, the thing we most worried is COVID situation. What has shocked us the most now is earthquake in Japan.

We knew Japan is an earthquake-prone country. However we thought earthquake is still a low probability event. We were a bit surprised the first advice given by a Japanese relocation agent was about earthquake. She suggested my wife and I should decide the emergent reunion place in case of earthquake. That is the place where a family can reunion if they are temporarily separated without mobile communication under a natural disaster.

I also found tips about how to survive earthquake posted in some bathrooms. Clearly Japanese have a strong sense of earthquake's threats.

We didn't take it seriously at beginning. We only realized what it meant to live in the most active earthquake zone after experiencing several large and small earthquakes in about a month time, particularly, after the one happened around 10:45PM on the last Thursday. All mobile phones suddenly made loud alarm about earthquake. Almost at the same time, the hotel room began to shake violently and lasted for more than ten seconds. We learned later it was about magnitude 6. The epicenter was near Tokyo and very close to us. This is another strong earthquake we have experienced in person after many years since the Tangshan earthquake in 1976.

The below summary showed there were 5 earthquakes each day on Oct 6 and 7.

When I talked about that earthquake with my Japanese colleagues, one was a little confused because he slept early and didn't wake up at all. Another one woke up during the earthquake, but turned around and fell asleep again quickly. He probably has got used to it. Overall, I can see Japanese have taken earthquake education and disaster prevention to a high level. At the same time, they are not over concerned for that in daily life.

That said, the Fukushima earthquake still caused serious consequences and has not been properly solved so far. How strong the power of nature and how weak the power of man are particularly obvious here, at least very clear to us. That is why we have prepared an emergency package besides setting the emergent reunion location. Hopefully we never need to use them.

After being shaken up by the earthquake when we went to bed three nights in a row in early November, we were shaken up again by the earthquake for a longer time this morning around two. This time it lasted about more than 2 minutes? I felt the whole room shaking. We just held hands and looked at the ceiling. Maybe it's because the house was just shaking. If it shook harder, may we take some actions? (there seems to be no clear idea about what to do. It's zero outside the house) I just learned that the earthquake was magnitude 5, and the epicenter was Ibaraki prefecture where we are located.

In the early morning of yesterday,  the 16th of January 2022, we were awakened again by the beeping of our mobile phones. I waited for a few seconds, but this time there was no earthquake shaking. I translated this mobile message. It was a tsunami warning. As the nearest shore should be more than 50 kilometers away, and there's nothing happened in our community, we just went back to sleep.  I learned from news reports in the afternoon that a metre wave hit Japan's Pacific coast this morning, triggered by a huge underwater volcano in the South Pacific.

Stunning satellite video has captured a huge underwater volcano eruption in Tonga. It said that this scale underwater volcano eruption happened very rarely. Take a note here.

We experienced two big consecutive earthquakes at late night of 16th with magnitude as 6.0 and 7.4.

We did not take any action during the 1st earthquake. We were shocked a bit for the 2nd stronger earthquake as everything in the room was shaking. We went up from bed and got into our selected shelter place – the dressing room not long after 2nd earthquake started.

There was no interrupt about water, electric and gas supplies. The epicenter was about 70 kilometers under the sea off the coast of Fukushima Nuclear Power Station. It said that the station was fired but ok now. The sad thing was 4 people died due to the earthquakes in Japan.
